What We Do

Complete Sitework, Start To Finish

From the first tree removed to the last curb poured, every phase below is self-performed by our own crews and our own equipment. Select a service to read the full scope.

Land Clearing & Demolition performed by Phillips Brothers
01

Land Clearing & Demolition

Clearing raw ground and taking down what stands in the way of the new build.

Most projects begin with removal rather than construction. Our crews clear wooded and overgrown parcels, strip topsoil for later reuse, and take structures down to grade so the site is ready for earthwork. Timber, stumps and brush are chipped, ground or burned on site where county ordinances allow it, and hauled off to a permitted facility when they do not.

On the demolition side we handle full building teardown, selective and partial demolition where part of a facility stays in service, and removal of existing asphalt, concrete slabs, footings and abandoned foundations. Utility disconnects are coordinated with the serving utilities before any machine starts, and erosion control is installed as clearing progresses so the site stays in compliance from day one.

  • Site and building demolition, full or selective
  • Tree, stump and brush removal, chipping or permitted burning
  • Topsoil stripping and stockpiling for reuse
  • Asphalt, slab, footing and old foundation removal
  • Off-site haul-off and disposal at permitted facilities
  • Utility disconnect coordination and erosion control installation

Excavation & Earthwork performed by Phillips Brothers
02

Excavation & Earthwork

Cut, fill and finish grade shaped exactly to the engineer's plan.

Earthwork is the core of what we do. Our fleet covers everything from multi-acre mass excavation and commercial building pads down to a single residential basement, and machine grade control on our dozers and excavators keeps the work on plan without waiting on a grade checker.

We balance cut and fill across the site wherever the plan allows, which keeps import and export hauling — and the cost that comes with it — to a minimum. Unsuitable material is undercut and replaced with engineered fill, placed in controlled lifts and compacted to the specified density, with testing scheduled alongside the geotechnical firm of record.

  • Mass excavation, cut-and-fill balancing and site grading
  • Building pads and subgrade preparation to specified density
  • Basement and footing excavation for residential builders
  • Undercut and replacement with engineered fill
  • Rock excavation and trenching
  • GPS machine control and in-house survey verification

Storm Sewer & Drainage performed by Phillips Brothers
03

Storm Sewer & Drainage

Pipe, structures and underground storage that move water off the site and keep it off.

We install complete storm drainage systems — reinforced concrete and HDPE mains, catch basins, curb inlets, junction boxes, yard drains, headwalls and outfall protection — as well as underground detention systems where surface storage is not an option.

Existing systems are also part of our work: rehabilitation of failing lines, replacement of collapsed structures, and combined sewer separation projects for municipalities working to take stormwater out of their sanitary system. Deep runs are shored with trench boxes and slide rail, crews carry 30-hour OSHA training, and every line is laser or GPS verified and camera inspected before it is accepted.

  • RCP and HDPE storm mains at any depth
  • Catch basins, curb inlets, junction boxes and manholes
  • Underground detention and infiltration systems
  • Headwalls, end sections, rip rap and outfall protection
  • Storm rehabilitation and combined sewer separation
  • Video inspection and grade verification at closeout

Sanitary Sewer & Pump Stations performed by Phillips Brothers
04

Sanitary Sewer & Pump Stations

Gravity mains, force mains and lift stations for growing municipalities and developments.

Growing communities either need new sanitary collection or need the system they already have brought up to capacity. We build both. Our scope covers gravity sewer and manholes, service laterals, force main, and complete submersible pump and lift stations from wet well through valve vault, piping, control panel and site fencing.

Tie-ins to live systems are planned around the community rather than the other way around — bypass pumping, night work and staged shutdowns keep service interruptions short and predictable. Every system is proven out before turnover with air and mandrel testing on gravity lines, vacuum testing on manholes, and pressure testing plus a full start-up on force mains and stations.

  • Gravity sanitary sewer, manholes and service laterals
  • Force main installation and pressure testing
  • Sanitary and storm pump stations, wet wells and valve vaults
  • Pump start-up with electrical and controls coordination
  • Bypass pumping and staged tie-ins to live systems
  • Air, mandrel and vacuum testing with documented results

Water Main & Distribution performed by Phillips Brothers
05

Water Main & Distribution

Ductile iron and PVC mains, valves, hydrants and services set to spec and tested.

Potable water distribution rounds out the utility package so a single contractor carries the whole site. We install ductile iron and C900 PVC mains with restrained joints and thrust blocking, valves and valve boxes, fire hydrant assemblies, and individual water services to the meter.

Materials come from vendors we have used for years, which keeps pipe, fittings and valves on site when the schedule calls for them instead of weeks later. Road and rail crossings are bored and cased rather than cut where conditions require it, and every line is pressure tested, chlorinated and cleared by bacteriological sampling before it is put into service.

  • Ductile iron and C900 PVC water main installation
  • Valves, valve boxes, fittings and fire hydrant assemblies
  • Water services and meter setting
  • Wet taps and tapping sleeves on live mains
  • Bored and cased road and rail crossings
  • Pressure testing, chlorination and bacteriological clearance

Detention & Retention Ponds performed by Phillips Brothers

Detention & Retention Ponds

Basins built to the hydrology report and finished so they hold what the design calls for.

Stormwater regulation has made on-site storage a requirement on nearly every development, and we have built a long list of them — dry detention basins that drain down between storms and wet retention ponds that hold a permanent pool.

The work runs from excavation to design contours and clay keyway through the outlet control structure, riser and barrel, anti-seep collars, emergency spillway, rip rap and erosion control blanket, and final seeding. Forebays and maintenance access are built in where the plan includes them, and we close out with an as-built survey confirming the storage volume matches the approved design.

  • Dry detention and wet retention basin construction
  • Excavation to design contours with clay liner and keyway
  • Outlet control structures, risers, barrels and anti-seep collars
  • Emergency spillways, rip rap and slope protection
  • Forebays, sediment storage and maintenance access
  • Erosion control blanket, seeding and as-built survey

Site Concrete & Paving performed by Phillips Brothers

Site Concrete & Paving

Slipform curb, walks, pavement and walls that finish the site off.

Our concrete division follows behind the dirt and utility crews so the site is completed by the same company that started it. We slipform curb, gutter and sidewalk, place concrete pavement, drive approaches and heavy-duty truck courts, and form the flatwork that does not lend itself to a machine.

Work includes ADA-compliant ramps with detectable warning surfaces, dumpster and equipment pads, light pole bases, and cast-in-place retaining walls. Reinforcing, jointing, sawcut timing, curing method and air entrainment all follow the project specification, and we schedule pours around the weather rather than forcing them through it.

  • Slipform curb, gutter and sidewalk
  • Concrete pavement, approaches and heavy-duty truck courts
  • ADA ramps with detectable warning surfaces
  • Dumpster pads, equipment pads and light pole bases
  • Cast-in-place retaining walls and custom flatwork
  • Reinforcing, jointing, sawcutting and specified curing

Turnkey Site Packages

Every phase above under one contract, one schedule and one point of contact.

Most of our work is awarded as a complete site package rather than a single trade. Clearing, earthwork, storm, sanitary, water, ponds and concrete are sequenced by one team, which removes the gaps between subcontractors where schedule and responsibility usually get lost.

Because the estimating, survey and field groups all sit under the same roof, quantities are tracked daily against the takeoff and the owner sees where the job stands without waiting for a monthly report. We work for general contractors, developers, municipalities, industrial owners and government agencies, and we are equally comfortable holding a prime contract or working as a sitework subcontractor.

  • Commercial, industrial, government and residential projects
  • Single contract covering the full site scope
  • In-house estimating, takeoff and site modeling
  • Daily quantity tracking against the original takeoff
  • Prime contractor or sitework subcontractor roles
  • Coordination with design, geotechnical and inspection teams

The Company

Owned By The People Running The Machines

Phillips Brothers Construction is a central Kentucky sitework contractor working on commercial, government, industrial and residential projects across the region.

On May 1, 2022 the company became one hundred percent employee-owned. That change did more than move a signature on a stock certificate — the operators, pipe crews, finishers and estimators who show up every morning have a direct stake in how the job turns out, and it shows in the quality of the work and in how long our people stay.

The office runs on current cost accounting, estimating and site modeling software, so a bid is built from measured quantities rather than a rough guess. Survey is handled in-house with GPS and robotic instruments, and automatic grade control on our equipment keeps the work on plan the first time instead of after a rework order.

Our yard sits about ten minutes from Fort Knox, Elizabethtown and Radcliff, which puts crews and equipment on most regional jobs the same morning they are called for. When you need sitework on your next project, make us the one call you have to place.

Site Walk & Review

We walk the ground with you, review the plans, soil report and permit conditions, and identify the access, drainage and utility issues that drive cost before they drive change orders.

02

Takeoff & Written Estimate

Quantities are modeled from the plan set in our estimating software, then returned to you as an itemized estimate covering scope, materials, exclusions and a realistic schedule.

03

Mobilization & Layout

Crews mobilize with erosion control installed first, site access established, and GPS survey layout loaded into the machines so grades are set correctly before the first cut.

04

Construction

Earthwork, underground utilities and concrete are sequenced by one team. Quantities and progress are tracked daily so the schedule you were given stays the schedule you get.

05

Testing & Documentation

Utilities are pressure, air, vacuum and camera tested as required, compaction results are compiled, and every result is documented for the engineer of record and the owner.

06

As-Builts & Turnover

We finish the punch list, complete final grade and stabilization, and deliver an as-built survey of the site so the record matches what is actually in the ground.
